Milton Rotary Club Presents Milton Musical “POPS” April 12 at Fuller Village for 350th Celebration

MILTON—The Milton Rotary Club, sponsor of the Baron Hugo Lira Musical Series, presents Milton Musical Pops for seniors as part of the Milton 350th Anniversary Celebration. Milton Musical Pops will be held at Fuller Village on Thursday, April 12, at 3:30 p.m., when Milton High School Orchestra will entertain the senior citizens, as they join with friends at an occasion for graceful informality, easy intimacy and celebration in a “POPS” atmosphere.

Reservations are required, but admission is free, as Baron Hugo Lira left a small fund in the care of the Milton Rotary Club to be used for the enhancement of music in the community.  Baron Hugo, a well-known bandleader who the hotel and ballroom circuit in and around Boston for more than 60 years, also donated the money used to build the gazebo in town.

To insure the adequate seating, a refundable check for $5 for each reserved seat must accompany the reservation form.  On attending the Musical event, the $5 will be refunded.

To make reservations, please mail your name, number of seats to be reserved and your refundable check to: Milton Rotary Club, c/o Frank J. Giuliano, Jr., 61 School Street, Milton, MA  02186.

Since the students must pay a fee of $100 to participate in the music programs or have to pay to participate in musical festivals, $1,000 will be donated from the Baron Hugo fund to help offset these costs.  The Music Director will determine how these funds are used.  The Milton Rotary Club will accept donations to the Baron Hugo Lira fund in order to replenish the fund and thus continue this series of music events for seniors.

Contributions can be made to Milton Rotary Club, Attn:  Baron Hugo Lira Fund, Box 243, Milton, MA 02186.

The Milton 350th Anniversary Committee  is planning a fireworks display scheduled for June 8 and parade on June 9. In addition, the committee is planning a field day, series of historic lectures, concerts, art exhibits and more. In addition, the committee plans to present the Town with a lasting Legacy to mark the 350th Anniversary.

The committee is selling memorabilia to support the effort. The committee is offering calendars with contemporary paintings by Milton artists; a china plate with historic Milton scenes, either for dinner or display; and a roundel, or suncatcher, with Milton's original Town Seal set in antique glass, and mugs and tee-shirts with the official logo of the 350th Anniversary Celebration, which was designed by Jackrabbit Design.

Tynan, who moved to Milton last year, is world famous as a former member of The Irish Tenors and for his powerful rendition of “God Bless America” during New York Yankee baseball games. He also performed at the Washington National Cathedral for the funeral of U.S. President Ronald Reagan, where he sang "Amazing Grace" and "Ave Maria.”

Pauline Wells, also a Milton resident, is a lieutenant with the Cambridge Police Department who began her singing career by accident at a pub in Ireland. Following 9/11 – the same historic event that brought Tynan to sing “God Bless America” at Yankee games – Wells became well known for delivering a pure and spirited version the American national anthem. Since 2001, she has performed at Faneuil Hall, the National Heritage Museum, Hynes Auditorium and Fenway Park.

Funds raised from “A 350th Concert” and other 350th Anniversary fund-raising events will cover costs for a fireworks display scheduled for June 8 and parade on June 9. In addition, the committee is planning a field day, series of historic lectures, concerts, art exhibits and more. In addition, the committee plans to present the Town with a lasting Legacy to mark the 350th Anniversary.

Milton 350th Committee Announces “Mayor of Milton” Contest

MILTON - Have you ever thought it would be great to be mayor of Milton?  “But wait,” you say, “Milton doesn’t have a mayor.”  Well, in 2012, Milton will have the first, ever mayoral race to raise money for Milton’s 350th Anniversary celebration. This is not an official position with any real powers. It’s a fun way for a few good sports to show their love of Milton and its rich history. The candidate who raises the most money wins and gets to be Mayor of Milton for a day and ride in the parade on June 9th.

Candidates can raise money through parties, raffles or other creative methods. Candidates “earn” one vote for each dollar they raise. Spread the word through Facebook, Twitter, e-newsletters, posters and any way that will raise awareness. Encourage friends and family to “buy votes.” You can also consider paid advertisements in local newspapers. Candidates will be featured on the Milton 350th website.

The 350th Committee is accepting nominations for mayor until Tuesday, February 7, 2012.  Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and reside in Milton. The campaign will end on Monday, May 7th. The winner will be announced in May 2012. To register as a candidate or for questions about the campaign, please contact Brian Kelley here or at: 617-615-9249.

The Milton 350th Anniversary Committee is planning a yearlong series of events to celebrate the anniversary of the incorporation of Milton in 1662 including a fireworks display scheduled for June 8 and parade on June 9. The money raised from the Mayor of Milton campaign will help fund field day and concert activities on the day of the parade and other fundraising initiatives of the 350th committee including a legacy gift to the Town. Checks should be made out to “Town of Milton” with “Milton 350th” in the memo.

Milton 350th Committee Raises $10K to Support 2012 Events

Curry College, Milton Academy Make Significant Contributions

MILTON—The Milton 350th Anniversary Committee, which is planning a year-long series of events to celebrate the anniversary of the incorporation of Milton in 1662, has raised almost $10,000 from donations.

This summer, Curry College donated $5,000 to the committee. In October, Milton Academy contributed $3,000 to the anniversary planning effort. Several other families and businesses made donations of $100 or more, too.

“On behalf of the entire Curry College community, I am both pleased and proud to enclose our check in the amount of $5,000 as seed money to the Town of Milton 350th Committee,” Curry College President Kenneth K. Quigley, Jr., said in a letter.

“For a town so rich in history, the anniversary will be a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the past while celebrating today’s Milton,” said Todd B. Bland, Head of School at Milton Academy, in a letter.

The donations will support a parade, fireworks display, concerts and many other events planned for 2012, the 350th anniversary year. “We are so thrilled to receive such generous donations to get us started,” Lynda-Lee Sheridan, chairman of the 350th planning committee.

The 350th Anniversary Committee set a fund-raising goal of $100,000. Funds raised would cover costs for a fireworks display scheduled for June 8 and parade on June 9. In addition, the committee is planning a field day, series of historic lecture, concerts, art exhibits and more. In addition, the committee plans to present the town with a lasting legacy to mark the 350th anniversary through a memorial, town improvement and/or scholarship fund.

Town Meeting had launched the committee with $5,000 in funding, and the Board of Selectmen appointed 16 members to the anniversary planning committee.

The committee is selling memorabilia to support the effort. The committee is offering a roundel, or suncatcher, with Milton's original town seal set in antique  glass. Mugs and T-shirts with the official logo of the 350th anniversary celebration, which was designed by Jackrabbit Design, and more memorabilia is in the works.
